“it is the responsibility of intellectuals to speak the truth, and expose lies. a battle of wits, you come unarmed at your own risk”. This is David Ndii’s Twitter bio which always comes to my mind whenever I come across people making baseless assertions on a subject they are not well versed in.
Unfortunately as a society we sometimes delegate reason to politicians and celebrities.
Why do you think the virus is not happening in Africa like that? Not a 5G region. There may be a few bases there, but not as prevalent as other countries. It has nothing to do w/ melanin (for those theories)… — Keri Hilson (@KeriHilson) March 16, 2020
Keri Hilson later recanted the statement after her management advised her to do so.
So what is 5G ? 5G is an abbreviation for the fifth generation of wireless communication used to implement cellular networks. To maybe understand this we might need to look at the Electromagnetic Spectrum which is essentially a range of frequencies. Below is an illustration demonstrating the same.
Radio waves tend to have longer wavelengths (the distance between identical points of a waveform) than Gamma rays. The bigger the wavelength the smaller the frequency and vice versa. Electromagnetic waves with shorter wavelengths tend to have more energy as compared to those whose wavelength is longer. 5G uses radio waves to transmit data. Radio waves are non-ionising meaning that they do not carry enough energy which can alter the structure of an atom by removing it’s electrons.
Radio waves have the lowest energy. 5G radiation cannot even penetrate the human skin, you are left to wonder how it would even allow viruses to penetrate the human body. To date there’s is no scientific evidence that 5G radiation can exacerbate the spread of the coronavirus.
It is also noteworthy to point out that radiation and viruses exist in different formats which do not even interact. Radiation is a phenomenon found at the electromagnetic spectrum whilst viruses are biological.
Eritrea has 31 cases of Corona Virus infection as at April 7th, this is a country that has no 5G infrastructure in place. How is it that some of it’s citizens were exposed to the virus.
What is the importance of this ?
For most of us in the technology space understand that 5G or rather radio waves cannot spread viruses. Addressing this issue is critical as there’s a a lot of destruction going on in the United Kingdom. At least 20 phone masts have been vandalised solely because of the myth.
